With our new site being up and running for five months (wow how time fly’s when you’re having fun) and lots of change on the horizon for Browns we thought it was time to go back and have a look at our roots and the fascinating history that is associated with Browns Family Jewellers. Where it all began…. 1840 The family first entered the jewellery trade in 1840, the company was first initiated by father John Brown and his son Charles Hood Brown. Together they began by opening three branches in Leeds, with two shops on Christopher Street and one on Burley Road. Charles’ son Herbert Brown later continued in the trade and had eight children who intern expanded the business to 26 shops! He returned the business back to his family by selling 21 of the 26 shops. 1953 Herbert Colin Brown, the only son of Herbert Brown, joined his father in the family business. Together they expanded the business opening branches outside Leeds and Rotherham for the first time. 1988-1999 Herbert Colin Brown had four sons that joined the company and continued to expand the business across the whole of the north of England, building it up to 25 shops before it was sold. 2010 The eldest son, Simon Brown continues in the family trade and has created the Browns Company that we know and love today. In its first year three shops were opened Barnsley, Crossgates and Mexborough. Although a contemporary company we have held on to our traditional ethos.
