Master the Art of Untangling Necklaces: Simple and Effective Techniques

Necklaces are a staple in any jewellery collection, effortlessly elevating even the simplest of outfits. That said, tangled chains are something we have all encountered, and they can be frustrating to deal with.

The good news is that there are a number of simple, effective ways to untangle your jewellery safely, helping you protect and enjoy your pieces for years to come.

Needle and Pin Method

Our go-to technique for more stubborn knots involves using a fine needle or pin. Gently work the tip of the needle into the knot, easing it back and forth to loosen the chain.

For tighter tangles, two needles can be especially effective. Insert one needle into each side of the knot and carefully ease them apart. This gives you better control and allows you to work the knot open without placing strain on the chain.

Take your time and avoid pulling too firmly, as delicate links can be damaged if forced.

Soapy Water

One of the simplest ways to loosen a knot is with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid. Apply a drop directly onto the tangle to help reduce friction.

Using your fingers, gently massage the knot and you should find the chain begins to loosen naturally. Once untangled, rinse the necklace in lukewarm water and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Baby Powder

If you would prefer not to use water, baby powder offers an excellent alternative. A light dusting over the knot helps to reduce friction, allowing the chain to move more freely.

You can then use a needle or your fingers to gently ease the knot apart. Once complete, wipe the necklace clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Storage Tips

Preventing knots in the first place is always the best approach. A few simple storage habits can make all the difference:

  • Store Separately
Keep each necklace in its own compartment or pouch to prevent chains from catching on one another.
  • Hang Individually
Use a jewellery stand or small hooks to hang necklaces so they remain straight and separated.
  • Cling Film Method
Lay each necklace flat on a piece of cling film and roll it up gently. This is particularly useful when travelling.

With a little care and the right approach, even the most delicate chains can be restored without damage. Whether you are dealing with a fine gold chain or a more intricate piece, these methods will help keep your jewellery looking its best.

At Browns Family Jewellers, we believe true luxury lies in the details, and caring for your jewellery properly ensures it can be enjoyed for generations to come
